A dynamite cover story in the latest Seattle Weekly – “Twilight for Immigrants” by Nina Shapiro – details the havoc being wreaked on lives and a community’s fabric by the U.S. Border Patrol’s heavy-handed tactics on Olympic Peninsula. The article is full of disturbing incidents which challenge the Border Patrol’s bland assertion that it does not engage in racial profiling.
Shapiro points out that some calls to local 911 dispatchers are now answered by federal border control agents. And she raises the broader issue of just what the Border Patrol’s actions far away from the border are doing to fulfill its mission of securing our borders.
In short, this is must reading for anyone concerned about fair treatment of all people in America and about excesses in the use of government power.
