Intake Counselor internships are available in the legal department of the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington Foundation. A six month commitment is required, with a minimum of 12 hours each week.
Interns review and investigate complaints alleging violations of civil liberties and assist callers on the ACLU Intake and Referral Line. They address a broad spectrum of issues, including free speech, student discipline, police practices, criminal law, and jail and prison conditions.
Intake Counselor interns learn interview and investigation skills, explore a variety of civil liberties and constitutional law issues, and become familiar with the work of a wide range of government agencies and community organizations. The Intake Counselor internship provides excellent experience for individuals contemplating careers in public service, law, or public policy.
Applicants should have an interest in civil liberties, good interpersonal and analytical skills, and excellent writing skills. Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
