Use of Pepper Spray Against Protesters at SeaTac Was Unnecessary and Excessive

The ACLU calls upon the Port of Seattle to review its policies and practices regarding use of force at peaceful protests to ensure that they do not violate fundamental rights. Port of Seattle police used pepper spray on protesters who were retreating from police during a peaceful demonstration at SeaTac Airport. From all appearances, this was an unnecessary and excessive use of force.
Pepper spray causes extreme discomfort and is potentially lethal. It must be employed with great care and in proportion to the situation. We urge police to use de-escalation efforts over any level of force.  Force should only be used if necessary to protect against physical harm and then only the level of force necessary should be used.
