Community Comment: Tech Bills

The 2020 legislative session has produced two technology bills (SB 6280 and SB 6881) that have drawn concern from community groups and advocacy organizations for their potential consequences on civil liberties. These bills contain troubling facial recognition provisions that could negatively impact vulnerable communities, and advocacy organizations are instead calling for a moratorium on facial recognition. Below is an archive of the many letters of opposition to SB 6280 and SB 6881, as well as two joint letters supporting a bill that would place a moratorium on facial recognition in WA, HB 2856.
