Human Resources Director

The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington (ACLU-WA) is seeking an experienced human resources professional to join our People Services Team as a Human Resources Director. This is an exciting opportunity to build on a robust system of people services systems and structures that center the ACLU-WA’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) while ensuring that the organization meets regulatory and nonprofit best practices. The position will report to the Deputy Director and manage the day-to-day HR functions for a staff of 45+. The Human Resources Director will partner with various teams to ensure equitable and inclusive processes and procedures and strengthen our equity and inclusion efforts by refining the way we recruit, retain, develop, train, and compensate staff.

This role is part of the People Services Teams that is led by the Deputy Director. As the backbone of the organization, we work as a team to support our staff and understand that advancing racial justice starts internally through the vendors we select, the policies we create, and the culture we build.
 
*Please note: the ACLU-WA is closely following the 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). Currently, we are all working remotely and will begin transitioning back to the office in Spring 2022 with a goal of opening fully under our new Hybrid Work Policy in Summer. We will continue to carefully monitor public health pronouncements and recommendations.  
 
To aid remote work, we provide laptops, home office supplies, certain equipment, and technology support. You will need an effective WiFi connection and a way to reach you by phone. This position is eligible for either a work phone or phone stipend, as well as an additional $100 stipend each month to help cover any additional costs while working from home.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will assist the Deputy Director in developing and implementing Human Resources goals and special projects, including partnering in the planning, designing, and execution of the following:
  • Staff Development: Provides staff with on-going guidance, training, and performance feedback to enhance their effectiveness and to provide them with career growth opportunities. Develop improvements as necessary to staff performance evaluation systems, new staff orientation, on-boarding, and staff wellness and training programs.
  • Employee Relations: Develops an atmosphere where employees feel comfortable coming to human resources for counsel. Analyze employees’ issues and recommends solutions. Support staff in resolving interpersonal conflicts with colleagues, including through mediation, and handling feedback professionally.
  • Organizational Culture: Models behavior and provides counsel to peers and staff that reflect the organization’s values, including a commitment to ACLU WA’s race equity work and addressing structural implications and disproportionate impacts of policies, activities, and decisions by identifying and implementing changes that can produce more equitable outcomes. Ensures that equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging are applied to people services. Alongside other organizational leaders, works to build a consistent culture of inclusive and equitable management. Serves as a resource to senior organization leadership on management and organizational culture development.
  • Talent Acquisition and Retention: Ensures that open positions are timely filled with qualified candidates, and that the on-boarding process enhances employees’ assimilation into the organization. Reviews, updates, and facilitates/manages hiring process to ensure accuracy, clarity, and legal compliance. Conducts exit interviews.
  • Reporting: Assists in developing and analyzing metrics and reports (such as employee satisfaction surveys, turnover, and exit interviews) and makes recommendations as appropriate.
  • Processes and Policies: Identify, recommend, and implement operational improvements to streamline HR processes and incorporate best practices in management, including updating employee policies and personnel handbook, as necessary.
  • Benefits Administration: Provides oversight of the annual open-enrollment and billing. Identifies opportunities to enhance benefit programs.
  • Legal Compliance: Ensures that the organization complies with all state and federal labor laws and that Human Resources policies and procedures are applied consistently throughout the organization; policies and practices are in place to ensure a safe work environment; and any changes are documented and communicated on a timely basis.
  • Leadership: Serve as a member of the organization’s Department Heads leadership team.
 

TARGETED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ideal candidates will have an awareness of, and willingness to engage in, the difficult and transformative work of challenging systems of oppression, institutional and structural racism, and implicit bias.
  • A personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstance.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required with focus in Human Resources or business-related field preferred.
  • Successful completion of HR coursework, i.e., PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP, preferred.
  • 5+ years relevant human resources experience, including demonstrated expertise in policy and benefits administration, strong knowledge of human resources and policy guidelines best practices, employee relations, staffing and recruitment, compensation/salary administration, performance management, leadership/management development, compensation/salary administration, performance management, and leadership/management development.
  • 3-5 years of experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in HR processes, identifying and addressing racial and/or ethnic disparities/barriers through use of an equity lens, disaggregated data, or other approaches.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work across lines of differences, and proven track record of working collaboratively and doing so well.
  • Experience facilitating trauma-informed conversations about racism and intersectional oppressions in diverse groups, preferred.
  • Proven ability for and success with giving and receiving feedback and building relationships with people across the organization.
  • Familiarity with employment laws, generally - Washington specific, preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and effectively communicate significant amounts of information across the organization.
  • Track record of success with maintaining private and sensitive information, demonstrated by experience exercising excellent judgment, discretion and upholding the highest level of confidentiality, a must.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills required with the ability to create systems and juggle multiple priorities and projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify potential issues, research new areas, develop new expertise and tap internal and external resources to identify solutions across a broad array of issues.
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to manage and complete a complex workload with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge and experience using HRIS systems and tracking Human Resources metrics.

The ACLU-WA office is generally open between the hours of 9a.m. and 5p.m. and is located in downtown Seattle. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The ACLU of WA is dedicated to centering equity in all aspects of the organization and, as such, has adopted a salary scale for measuring how to best compensate its employees. The salary for this position is $145,000 – $160,000. A range indicates the intention to accommodate those with varying years of relevant experience, as determined by the salary scale.
 
Benefits include three weeks of vacation, thirteen sick days, fifteen holidays, fully paid employee medical, dental, vision, and disability insurance, a generous retirement plan, and an ORCA card, the regional transportation pass.
