Macy's Transgender Discrimination

A transgender woman contacted the ACLU of Washington after a sales associate at Macy’s in Lynnwood, WA refused to let her use the women’s dressing room to try on clothes, claiming that she was not feminine enough. The ACLU of Washington sent a letter to Macy’s on her behalf to complain of the unlawful discrimination in violation of Washington state law. In response to the ACLU’s complaint, Macy’s retrained its Lynnwood employees on Macy’s diversity and non-discrimination policies, which provide that transgender customers must have access restrooms and dressing rooms that are consistent with their gender identities.
